I know this was written years ago, but now that we have Ash vs Evil Dead, chapter 5 doesn't seem as off to me (though my initial thoughts were similar to yours). I too wish there was more about magic, but I like the mention that the Necronomicon wants people to cast its spells and makes it easy to do. Finally, the tone didn't bother me, because it kind of felt like Ash wrote the book.
