Truly one of the last of the banjos of the classic era, the Lyon and Healy 'Own Make' was the last banjo line to be produced by, and sold under the Lyon and Healy banner. These banjos were produced in very limited numbers in 1923 and 1924.

Dowel stick stamping doesn't seem to have been their strong suit though, and the only letter you can make out of the stamping, is the letter 'M' from Make. The serial number 1517 is there, but was stamped before staining and finishing, so it's almost as though it were steamed out. It matches the number in the rim which was stamped after finishing and is quite crisp. I would have had much more trouble Identifying it if my friend in Minnesota didn't have one with much better stamping.

Well, not that much better, but the 'style C' and the serial number stamps were markedly better. Funny thing is that Larry's is number 1515, so they were on the bench at the same time. The George Washburn book makes mention of these banjos. The style A was fancier and had a tone ring. This is the style C, which does have a metal head bearing, but you can't see it with the head installed. If this is sold, I will finish cleaning it up.

I am in the midst of clearing very old work, and won't lavish the time on it unless somebody wants it. If it weren't for the post office hundred dollar billin' me to death shipping the old customer orders, I wouldn't sell this at all. Aside from coveting it for what it is, I've no practical use for it. The tailpiece is from a Slingerland, and aside from the skin head, which is a replacement, the rest of the banjo is original, right down to the friction uke tuners, and nearly flawless finish. The metal is in very nice condition. The hooks polish up nicely, but there's a bit of rust on them. There's no plating loss on any of the other parts and there's not much fret wear at all.

It would be nice to see this in a collection of classic banjos, strung with nylon, but once it leaves my hands, I've nothing to say in the matter. I do know that any banjo this old. In this condition. The fact that this is an original 5 string. Well, that's the icing on the cake.

Bill's Banjos Welcome to This website is dedicated to photos and descriptions of the many banjos in my collection, along with a few other vintage instruments I have picked up over the years. I have authored this site in the hope that other collectors might follow suit and share photos and information on their banjos with others in the collecting community. Since my interest in banjos stems in part from my interest in the technological development of the instrument over the years, my collection spans the period from the 1840’s to the 1920’s. As my collection evolves, banjos presented on the home page of this site may be removed and added to a ' page. Banjos in my current collection are listed alphabetically by manufacturer or brand name. I have recently added a page on for those interested in how this particular art form developed over the years and through the transition from Fairbanks to Vega ownership.
