There, I've said it. I think it's a lazy, out of date, terrible piece of software what barely supports cut & paste, opens a massive security hole by requiring Java VM (even Oracle who own both Java and Open Office have abandoned it), it doesn't support temporal analysis or export to any useful formats to do so. Reports are fugly, some options are in dumb places. They were first, it was a leader at the time, but seriously nobody seems to develop or maintain it, it still feels like the 1990's.

Is there anything better yet that anyone actually finds a pleasure to use? Just had a look (I'm only on my phone) and $400 isn't outrageous if it'll do everything MMB does but get some basics right - like copy and paste intuitively, and make it easy to create sub-budgets and do setwise operations with items with a specific group of lines. I'm secretly hoping it'll be able to do things like 'show me a list of who is on rate T3' which is incredibly basic stuff for a database to be doing, but which MMB don't expose. I also see they have a cashflow product, I'm looking forward to having a play with that, too!

When I come to explore, I want to get clear on what phases represent in data terms so I can think about modelling methods, and how they compare to groups, for instance, and just how to apply things for UK tax purposes. I do wish they made a PDF manual available - watching tutorials on YouTube is less convenient than being able to look stuff up, and to the credit of MMB they do provide a good manual! Some things are not always intuitive, couple of what seem like irritating bugs which I worked out how to work around, still trying to get used to the actualising workflow reliably, there's no direct equivalent to a subtotal adjustment, a couple of places globals don't apply where they could, the manual is a bit thin on detail for some details. But bloody hell, the PHASES are worth it alone. I set up three phases with fringes, a phase total, similar for actuals, an estimate to complete, and out pop excellent cost reports.

I've not done a manual check on the figures yet, but I'll forgive it anything but bad maths for those phases and actuals tracking. If anyone else is using/hating (same thing?) MMB, give yourself a day to experiment and you'll remember the joys of a balancing, functional budget, but I've that also includes actuals and petty cash management.
