Gregpolard wrote:How are the albums after this one? Worldbroken = a fully improvised live album (with the exception of the lyrics of course).Mike Watt on bass.it has good moments actually but is probably the least accessible of the records due to its improv/jazzy nature We Became Snakes = in my opinion, their best and most cohesive record. Really powerful stuff.also heavily jazz influenced (which I think almost goes without saying for this band save the Pagan Icons mini-LP) and improvised in spots, and therefore, a challenging listening.but probably the one album to own if you're only going to own one. Great rhythm section here too. Past Lives = interesting live album with stuff ranging from their earliest of days up to the time the album was released (roughly 1980-1987 probably). The Great One Is Dead = I was so psyched there was a new ST album (released in the early 2000s I think).and Brewer/Baiza are so distinctive.but I think enough time passed that it doesn't really feel like a ST record to me.decent, but I think I'm just too unfamiliar with the record to really give any commentary.

Ultimately, i would say the essential stuff is there first two albums and the live cd. There is enough of their punk roots on them to keep it interesting, but sometimes they really went of the rails(like worldbroken) and got a bit too self indulgent. I saw them in 2004 and they were horrible.

I don't think they played anything from the early era and it was long one jam. I kept going back to the bar to make it through the set.

YouTube link to the full We Became Snakes record: I think my recommendation of We Became Snakes as the essential release should have a disclaimer. If you're interested in the true essence of what ST was about - which is a band rooted in the early 80s punk/SST scene but who were strongly interested in mixing in improvised jazz/fusion, then I'd say We Became Snakes is the peak. If that doesn't interest you, then I'd say the only ST records you would be interested in would be the Paganicons 12' (which has little, if any, jazz influence except for maybe some of Baiza's playing in spots) and the Surviving You, Always LP - which definitely does have that jazz influence creeping in - but is more on the punk side of the line than the jazz side of the line and is a record you would probably still find interesting. If the jazz/fusion/improv thing doesn't interest you in all - just stay away from any of the records post-Surviving You. Posts: 602 Joined: Mon Aug 12, 2013 4:08 pm. In regards to PAST LIVES, here's my story. ST were headlining CB's on a Wednesday night, wasn't going to be able to catch it as I was normally up at 5am for work, so I went to the city after work, met the guys (who I had met and bought drinks for previously at Maxwells) and gave them the following: a cassette, $5 and an addressed postage paid envelope.

I explained that I wouldn't make the show but that for $5, CB's would do a board tape, please have the show recorded and then throw it in the mail. The tape never arrived (not surprising). What was surprising was that when Past Lives came out and I bought a copy, I saw that there were tracks from the CB's show along with my name in Thank Yous.
